Pembrokeshire. My teenage years in 90’s grunge, Nivarna and Faithless led, pre-mobile phone, Levis and Doc Martins era, where you only touched a computer to go on a Nintendo!
Pembrokeshire was the perfect place to hang around with a walkman, fringe, hair half tied up, half down, wearing stained surfy t-shirts, mood rings (you can probably still buy them in Equinox) Docs and unshapely jeans.
It helped ingrain my laid-back attitude. For me it wasn’t a great or bad time tbh, apart from the music of course… BritPop, grunge, the Rave scene, DJing and culmination of dance 🎧
Just the usual teenage angst. I’ve only truly started to appreciate it now I’m back after a 7 year stint away in London.
Coastal and rural life is subtle and grows on you. Simple pleasures, fresh air, green fields, and space to think for yourself. It’s easy to live here.
Exploring Pembrokeshire
Throughout the summer I’ll be walking the coastal path. It’s a good place to start and by far the biggest draw for Pembrokeshire.
Along the way I’ll stop off at some local haunts, tourist attractions and secluded spots. Pembrokeshire has its own brand of ”Welshness”. Each town and village has a unique personality, moulded mainly by the vast mix of residents.
I will also venture into North Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire. It’s distinctly more Welsh around these parts. The Welsh language, traditions and way of life is ever present. I have family roots in these areas and I’m intrigued to find out more.
Follow my blog for travel in Pembrokeshire and beyond. I’ll blog about travel tips, local finds, things to do and some interesting and funny thoughts from the people I meet on my travels.
My top 5 things to do in Pembrokeshire and beyond
- Take a walk on a stretch of coastal path. It will no doubt revitalise you.
- Do one outdoor activity to suit your level of fitness, even it’s just a boat trip to Caldy Island.
- Visit one of the Welsh towns like Cardigan or Carmarthen. Keep an ear out for the Welsh speakers. It’s interesting to listen to.
- Seek out a music gig. The Welsh are a talented bunch.
- Eat chips with condiment of choice, sit on a rock and ponder.
